One of my middle box hangers rusted through, leading to an annoying rattle where the rear box now hits something. The second middle box hanger isn’t far behind.
I’d like to swap the middle and rear sections but the join/flanges where the middle joins the front Y is badly corroded.
The pipes themselves look ok and I’d like to avoid messing with the front section. Cats, O2s etc.
Will a new middle section be able to join to an old front in this instance?
Or am I left with the welding option if I want to keep the front while swapping the middle?
It does look pretty bad in the photo. If it was me I’d try taking it apart and see how bad that forward flange really is. You might be able to use it. You probably don’t have anything to lose in trying.
Nothing to worry yet, still plenty of metal there, all I got is the gasket. Hangers are also almost gone.
Going to get all stainless before winter. http://i.imgur.com/1iY1BDK.jpg
I think my exhaust is the original from 2002, oh and it's a TD5.

It would need drilling to take apart. Bolts are now rusted nubs.
If the flange IS toast, does that rule out using the whole front section? That would drastically alter my job.
Is there any kind of bolt together flange, for this case, where the pipe is ok, but the flange is done?
Drilling or grinding for sure. Worst case scenario would be you need a muffler shop to weld the intermediate pipe to the front pipe. I’m pretty sure you don’t need to replace the front section (unless the cats are plugged).
