will drive/wait/see. at the end of the buttoning-up i refilled with new Rotella T5 and changed the oil filter.

Good.

The biggest mistake people make after a head gasket job is driving it without changing the oil.

I always open the drain and dump a couple quarts in there to flush out all the garbage.

It'll wipe out your bearings.

Just to clarify: I drained all the oil out, replaced head gaskets, put it all back together, filled it with new oil and changed the oil filter. I was advised in another thread to change it again, which I have not done because I don't want to buy 8 more quarts of Rotella.

I should have cleaned out the oil pan and replaced the gasket before refilling. Should I get a magnetic oil drain plug?
