Exhaust resonator
Is the exhaust system resonator/tailpipe the same for MY 2003/2004 4.6L as it is for the 99.5-2002 4.0L?
My tailpipe rusted clean off, so a replacement is in order. Some parts sites list different PNs but others do not, so I have some confusion.

The resonator isn't necessary. I'd save a few bucks and have a new tailpipe welded sans resonator.
I agree with Frank. The resonator delete is a popular modification. I'd definitely just have a piece of pipe welded in to run out the back. Shouldn't cost you more than a few dollars.
I'll look into that option. Any bit of louder exhaust noise will help drown out all the chatter from under the hood.
In other news, that aftermarket section of pipe rusted through in 2 years. That's one case for going OEM I suppose.

D*mn, two years? How much salt is on the roads where you live? It shouldn't rust through in two years even with salt rust. Insane.
OEM is too expensive IMO. I'd either pay a shop to weld up a custom system if that were the case. Should last a lot longer than two years and will be cheaper than OEM.

PennDOT loves to spray the saline on the roads around here. I replaced the whole system due to a loose cat core and a separated seam in the muffler; could have sprung for the Magnaflow cat-back set up, but it was a bit spendy the way it was, so I rolled the dice. Can't recall what brand it was. I don't see any markings on the unit anywhere.
Oh well.
Oh well.
There is an additional throaty rumble to the exhaust sound now. Not a huge difference at all. I just wanted to eliminate it since it hangs pretty low and I chopped a lot of the back panels off when I put a new bumper on. If you really want I can send you the deleted resonator.
Appreciate the offer. Actually the resonator is in great shape...it's the pipe itself that has flaked to hell. Unfortunately the pipe upstream of the resonator is trashed too. Will have to go all the way back to the mating flange at the aft end of the muffler.
I am going to try a local shop to have a pipe made up. Worst case I'll buy another resonator pipe assembly, but as I originally posted, I see conflicting info regarding the 03/04 being same part as 99-02.

Not a single one of my LR's including my new to me 06 LR3 have their resonators. I really like how the DOHC 4.4L V8 sounds now. It reminds me of a Jaguar Sports Car or a Mercedes Benz.
Just leave the resonator off and get the pipe replaced. Let your V8 be a V8!!
