Default Expansion tanks

Well new year starts more stuff to do, thought I’d be pro active and replace the expansion tank.
I remember seeing AlliSport do a metal tank, I think ? A sight gauge is useful and saw you can have an option of a float.
is that worth the extra?
apart from that brand are there other ones that are bettter made?

cheers

I have the one from Carrs 4x4 and I think it is very good. I also have the Carrs AL y pipe. I don’t see any point in doing the puke tank without doing the other plastic parts too.

I don't trust the welds on the cheap Chinese ones. I suppose I'd use it if I had time to pressure test it for a few days before install. If purchasing from a trusted vendor it looks like a Sweet upgrade.

As things fail and I run out of spades I intend on replacing all plastics on our disco 2.

Yeah I wish I’d done the extinct upgrade when I replaced the radiator hoses and thermostat, once I get the tank I’ll replace the hoses in and out with silicone ones

I did the cheap Chinese eBay version expansion tank last Fall, it's been great, no issues. Don't get me wrong, it's not very pretty, doesn't sit quite level, and has that cheap lil sight bolt window to see the fluid level, but, it works. Does the job, doesn't leak, and cost less than $20 over a plastic version that we all know will leak within a few months.

There are certainly things you don't want the cheap out on in the world, but a lil tank to hold hot liquid is prolly not something that needs to cost upwards of $300, IMO. But just to state the obvious, I'm cheap. If money isn't an object for you, why not go ahead and spend hundreds of dollars on one the pretty versions with the big window, it IS nice lookin after all. But if looks and status aren't all that important to you, and you just need something that works and isn't gonna develop insidious hidden lil leaks every few months like the plastic ones are all but guaranteed to do these days... go ahead and run the $80 eBay aluminum expansion tanks, they work great, IME

I had a Carrs4x4 AL tank in my D2. The sight glass broke and leaked. I went with a Mahle plastic tank, and it hasn't leaked in the 2+ years it's been in.

Carrs4x4 tanks now come with sight glass replacements. I like the plastic tanks because they allow me to glance at and see the level when playing coolant hide-and-seek with my D2. I also keep a spare tank on hand in case the current one starts to fail.

Before the Carrs4x4 one, my prior plastic tank was failing in one of the welds/seams and down low. It was hard to find that leak.
