Default Factory subs in '02 DII

I am 1000 miles from my Discovery so I cant check anything right now. I am thinking about descretely putting an amp and an 8" woofer where each of the jumpseats would mount. I dont want to rattle the neighborhood, I just want cleaner and lower lows.

My questions:

1. Are the 2 small subs mounted in the rear door powered by their own amp (if so, where is it located) or do they recieve their power from the head unit?

2. Is the signal going to the factory subs bass only? Or does it carry mids and highs as well?

Here is a quick cad drawing of what I am thinking about. A sealed box, with the amp mounted on top with two 80mm fans, one pulling fresh air in and the other blowing the exhaust air out. A 30a relay for the remote power signal to the Amp and the fans and a fused power distributor. Comments and/or suggestions are welcomed.

Out of bordom, I added a color pic

Looks like a cool design, nice drawing. I do believe that the rear door subs are powered by thier own amp. I'm not sure where it is, I think it's also in the rear door. I think the signal that is being sent to those subs is mid and lows. Although I'm not sure exactly what frequency cut offs are used. Even so, if you use that signal, you could install a crossover to limit frequencies desirable for your new subs. Good luck!

on my '99 Disco II the subs are powered off the amp under the drivers seat...I opted to keep the stock deck and buy two 10" woofers already in a box and a cheap amp with 150 watts a side. All you need to do is run the power wire with an inline 40-50 amp fuse and pick up a signal converter that turns your rear sub leads into RCA's from www.peripheralelectronics.com the beauty of this device is it acts like a remote turn on switch so no need to tap into the deck or amp. I am really happy with my $200 system and the HK's come through nicely if I can give any advice here I would say to get an amp with a bass remote ****(Hifonics amps are super cheap and have one) so you can adjust the bass otherwise you'll be kicking yourself since most mixes nowadays are either real hot or not hot enough

here's a link to Peripheral Electonics .....the converter is called the SVENR

one more thing....it would be a good idea to hunt down a rear cargo cover to hide your speakers ......thanks DiscoMike!

I appreciate the kind words and the links for possible wiring solutions. I made it home Thursday night and measured the compartments, thats when I realized a more pressing problem will be finding an amp that will fit on top of the box. the enclosures will have roughly 1.4 cubic feet of airspace so I will be powering 2 - 8" woofers (1 on each side) in sealed boxes so I dont need 10,000 watts of power. But does anyone know of a 1 or 2ch amp that is less than 7inches wide? I am on the road again and didnt get to start cutting out pieces while I was home but hopfully I can get started this weekend. Ill keep ya posted

Ok, its been a long time since I started this project. But Im finally making some good progress.I decided to make the enclosuresoutof molded fiberglass for aperfect fit and finish. The speakers will be flush with the interior and painted to match for the ultimate in stealth installations. Im still mounting 8s in mine but I believe 10s or even 12s would work (its a sealed box so 12s will be as big as I would be comfortable using). I should have the boxes mounted late next week. I will post the pictures once they get back from the paint shop. If they look as good as I think they will Ihave the molds and mayconsider making up some more ifanyone is interested.

I may be interested!
I'd think you only need one fan, not two, unless the second is further accelerating the air beyond what the first fan is doing.
Will your box work with rear A/C?

Aquaholic,

I've pretty much ditched the fan idea unless I find it neccessary.

The Fan set up was one pulling fresh air in and the other blowing hot exhaust air out.

My DII doesnt have rear air so Im not sure about fittment. These boxes are being built to fit perfectly and stealthy where the jumpseats would be. I dont have jumpseats so they are just storage compartments.

The prototype paint job did not past mustar, so we have moulded some more to ensure the highest quality finish. Im going to attach some pictures of the face with an 8" sub and grill (green fiberglass) before going to paint.
