Fan clutch question
Yes. The fan clutch is about an inch longer but it will still fit perfect. And the nut is easier to get a wrench onto. The only modification I had to do was to widen the bolt holes on the fan and you will also have to get different bolts to mount the fan blade on the clutch. I used 10M - 1.50 20mm (got them at Lowe's) and lock washers. It works great, doesn't rub against the fan shroud, and best of all you will save $$$$.
Bundu,
Been researching like crazy on a way to replace fan clutch on my 2003 and I see you have the same year, with the "integrated fan clutch." Do you recall when you did the Chevy clutch with the fan part # 620-602 from Advance, did you have to mod the fan at all to fit the housing? Or was it a direct fit? I've read some fans require trimming.
Thanks.

Im still exploring cooling issue on my 01 D2 112k.. the electric fan comes on after about 10min idle and stays on.. im going to get some accurate temp readings this week.. does anybody know if the fan is supposed to spin "drag free" when you spin with your hand?? I know some yes some no.. I was thinking about to the Chevy fan clutch mod..( if needed) I found this cool video on youtube.. looks super easy.. let me know please if this guy is crazy..lol How To Remove A Land Rover Fan and Viscous Clutch Without Any Special Tools - YouTube
The viscous clutch when warmed up and engine stopped, you spin with hand and release, it should not turn more than 1/2 to 1 turn. If it freewheels, it is shot, the silicone fluid inside has escaped (who would notice another oil leak on a Rover?).
Without the fan "engaging" you will have inadequate cooling at idle or slow speed and your head gaskets will be looking deep into your wallet. Fix this in the next few days, and try not to be in a staionary idle.
The hammer and wrench is the accepted manner, pop it sharply; try to push slow and hard and you'll just spin things.

Thanks for the trouble shooting Savannah.. first im gonna test that fan spin again when shes warm.. I just learned about the clutch.. i never knew these fans spin at different speeds.. stupid newbie question.. I know all cars have these clutches.. why not just always have them work at high with no clutch?? one thousand thank yous for you patience

The fans are actually a "silent killer". When new, the clutch will make a "roar" when cold, becasue fluid pools to one side and it couples at 70 - 90% when first cranked. Then is spins up, circulating fluid, and warms up and drops back to about 20% coupling. That saves gas. But when it warms up to "hot" it is supposed to re-couple at the higher level and provide extra cooling at idle and slow speeds. As fluid is lost from the clutch, it quits making that roar on cold crank up, no one notices, and it slowly starts increasing the temp your engine deals with at idle and stuck in traffic. Some techs will hold the fan and stop it, or try to stick a rolled up magazine to stop it, those are dangerous, don't do that, you don't need to be called "Stubby." And by warm, I mean when engine is up to operating temp, it does not need to be 80F outside.
Thanks again Savannah.. I just performed the fan test.. I let it warm up.. and then tried to spin the fan... and she had some pretty good drag on it.. maybe 1/4 turn like you said.. and something odd also happened when warming up.. THE ELECTRIC FAN NEVER KICKED ON
.. im not questioning it!! I learned from lurking around this forum to leave well enough alone.. I finally got this thing to pass inspection and am looking forward to just enjoying it now and praying for some snow

On a DII the electric fans will come on automatically once the engine is partially warmed up if the a/c is on and/or the HVAC is set to "AUTO".
If you have it set to "ECONOMY" they will not come on.
