Default Fastest speed...

I got my '04 going 120mph last Tuesday, and since I had a lot of throttle left, I'm wondering how fast you guys have gone.

(I was alone and on an isolated rural road, no animals or liberals were harmed...)

Never gone over 85 in the disco, I drive it like its fragile, I want it to last forever. But, we brought a range rover sport out to a local drag strip and it got up to 145, and that was not all it had! It was amazing how it felt when the driver floored it! I mean, its an SUV and it felt extremly sporty.

Well my DI I have had up to 90 mph, but my 2001 Mitsubishi Montero I had over 120.
I was alone driving to Traverse City in the left lane with the cruise set at 80 passing a semi, a guy in a Jeep GC with the 5.7L H.O. tried to shoot around me on the right.
I looked over, waved the one finger wave and floored it and held it until he was a dot in the rearview mirror.
He tried to keep up but couldnt.
Man I miss that truck.

Wow, Montero for the win! Very cool story, Phil!

I understand the Discos weren't built for speed, but it was incredibly stable and smooth. Of the other cars that I've had at high speeds, the Disco was by far the smoothest. NEVER started shaking! I didn't pay too much attention to the tach, but I think I was only at 4,200 RPMs, but I may have been at 4,500. I think I could have hit 140 or more, given enough road (which I didn't have).

Plus, Weezer's "Greatest Man" was almost over, so I couldn't have kept it up mentally anyway...

Our 2000, with its 16" tires shakes a bit at 80+ mph, so I don't know if I'd want to take her up there or not... I'll probably never d0 100+ again with the Disco. Something that I just wanted to do once to know that I could.

Just keep the brakes LIGHT, and let the wind and the engine slow you down until you're down below 100, then just lightly apply the brakes until you're back in the realm of sanity.

I also had a Infiniti I30 that I had up over 120 at one time, that car LOVED to go fast, my wifes Volvo will do 120 and then some.
The way the Montero was shaped the faster you went the more stable she got, the wind pushed her down and she was just as stable at 120 as she was at 60, and yes, the cruise worked at 125.
The cruise on the Infiniti worked at 120 but no higher.
What is it about 120? Is it because thats all the higher the speedo goes? The "V's" speedo goes to 140 but I will never get her that fast, would be fun to do though.

The funny thing about speed... everything above 140 all feels the same (especially on a bike)!

I've never had my Disco above 90, and typically try not go go over 70, but I have had some fast cars and some seriously fast bikes. The Lexus IS is electronically governed to 145, as was the GS. I've had the LX to 120 or so, but never went all-out to see what it could do. I've had Porsche's, RX-7's and Z-cars, all fast and fun. I think I've had a 911 upwards of 170mph, and that WAS exhilarating...

Now, when it comes to FAST, that's where bikes come in. I've seen an indicated 200mph on a Suzuki Hayabusa, which was probably more like 185 when adjusted for speedometer error at that speed. My FJR is an obscenely fast machine, and could motor along all-day at 150 without feeling the least bit strained. I was arrested for "traveling at speeds in excess of 150mph" on the Western KY Parkway late one summer-night back in 2002. That's an interesting story, it turns out the State Trooper was traveling in the other direction when he saw me and decided to give pursuit... He chased me for 20 miles without me ever knowing he was back there, and he only gained ground when I un-tucked and exited for fuel! Much to my chagrin, I learned they were actually setting up a road-block before I would have made it to the interstate anyway...

I'm sure sloppyjoe has an anecdotal tale to tell in a thread such as this...

Its funny I grew up overseas and learned to drive much faster than here.
My school bus would drive at 130 kph most times.
