I'm in on the case of $4 K&N filters! I just spent $13.00 on a Mobil because the zone was out K&N's.

ORIGINAL: avking

Someone earlier in the post said to replace the drain plug before removing the filter. If you leave the plug out when removing the filter, more oil will drain from the plug. Getting more out is a good thing, so do not replace the plug until after you remove the filter.
too late i drained then put plag back in. didnt have filter wrench, it was on there pretty good had to punch screwdriver thru and twist off. Got all covered in oil, spilled my beer, spilled about a 1/4 quart oil on pavement... added 6 quarts oil and still low but looks fine enough to drive to where i can dump off used oil. now i wanna do the induction cleaning and have no idea where the hose is to suck the can in... goin to my neighborhood mechanic to ask for help. will keep posted.

Castrol Syntec 20w-50, or Mobil 1 15w-50 are both a good choice for where you live.

Learned a new thing today from this thread: Disco Mike mentioned reusing the oil drain plug ring by flipping it over and installing it on the oil drain plug. Will try it next time instead of using Teflon tape.

Heads up on preventing a mess in the driveway: Few oil changes ago, I removed the oil filter and installed a new one, refilled oil and started the engine. In less than a minute, I had few quarts of oil spewed on the driveway.

I did not pay attention to the oil filter rubber seal on the old filter that I had just removed. It remained stuck to the oil filter housing on the engine. The new filter was installed on top of it, which caused it to pop out after starting the engine.

What a mess to clean.

Ditto on the drain plug washer. I've never once replaced it, just flip it over. I don't know what genius marketing person spread the rumor about using a new one each time. Anything for a buck at LR. As a funny side note, I get e-mails from the local dealer LR dealer about their service specials - they include (and charge for) changing diff fluid every 7500 miles! We're talking soccer mom discos that have seen nothing but pavement, not mud and water crossings every weekend.

the older ferraris use a copper o ring on the drain plug.

every other change i just take a propane torch and heat up the copper to let it expand. then i let it cool and it works over and over

Its not just LR that says to replace the crush washer at every oil change, I never replace mine either.
You can buy a million of them for a dollar, but why when you can reuse your old one.
