Default Fix For Stripped Manifold stud

One of my passenger side exhaust manifold studs stripped, and I have it together with a nut and bolt, but have to tighten it periodically. It's the interior bolt and I don't know if I can get a tap into it to rethread.

Has anyone tried it? Is there a different solution?

I put a nut on the end of my broken stud. I put a bit of purple high temp thread lock and that has been holding fine.

When I take it off again, I’ll just apply some heat to the thread lock and hope it’ll break loose.

Could I tap it from the top does anyone know? Although, I don't think that offers room.

You can, the holes go through the flange. But I agree, there's not much room on the top side, probably less. I had to drill one of the studs out once and just pulled the manifold. Much easier on the bench.

I don't relish the thought of pulling the manifold.

I had to do the same it took me about an hour to get the manifold out, BUT all my bolts turned easy. It was not hard you just do not have much room to turn the ratchet/wrenches, so lots of very short throws. I have SAI and all I had to remove were a couple of vacuum lines.

Start with a standard 3/8 drive ratchet, if they will not budge with that hitting all the bolts with penetrating oil drive and repeat for a few days. You will need standard and deep 12 point sockets. Make sure all the bolts will turn - none are seized before you go to town taking things apart.

I had to clean up and tap the blind one it is really pretty straight forward.

I recently did my HG’s so I get it, just do not want to take out the manifold again if I can avoid it.

The whole process, from grinding and drilling the stud to tapping and installing is a pain in the rear. I did this to a clients rover. All done by hand, no press.
