Default Flashing odometer on new(ish) to me 03 Disco

I bought my 03 D2 about a year ago,.....maybe less. The odometer was flashing when I bought it,...did a bit of research here and learned that it would need to be synched with a test book (if memory serves me). I stopped in a local independent LR shop recently and he said that he could do it for $90,.....but, that if the reason for the odometer flashing was due to the prior owner or dealer having rolled the miles back,.......that the miles could possibly end up indicating a number much higher than the currently indicated 158,000 after the test book synch.

Anyone know if this is correct. Thinking I don't want to spend $90 to stop my odometer flashing if I end up with 200,000 miles on it all of a sudden.

That sounds right. The Gauge Cluster and the Vehicle Computer each store a mileage. I believe the Gauge Cluster syncs to the Vehicle Computer's Mileage.

Using my AutoCom Scanner, it shows the mileage on each computer independently. I'm guessing your shop can do the same BEFORE syncing them. That way, you can decide which way to go. You never know, maybe you'll end up with Lower Mileage?

I test drove a 2004 at a local dealership a few weeks ago. The cluster said 75K and was flashing. The Carfax showed a well documented history up to 99K miles. I guess Carfax saved my bacon that time.

My nanocom can read and sync the miles, but it is true that the miles can only be synchronized UP. Which ever device has the lowest miles will be updated with whatever has the highest miles.

Another option is to just edit the setting in the BCU and turn off the warning. The miles will still not match, but the odo won't flash. Nanocom or hawkeye or others can do this too.

Hummm. That means the used car dealer switched / changed the dash? Not good.
Get a carfax and see where it was fixed in the past and the miles on it if you care to.

When you change the binnacle dash this sometimes happens. It's not necessarily a roll back fraud just one of those quirky things. As someone already said, it will synch up to the highest denominator whether that is the binnacle or the ECU depends what has been changed but one or the other is usually correct unless they've changed both.

You just go into the BCU settings on the tool and turn it off. I think hawkeye calls it security or something.

It's at the bottom of this page in rave:

And here is the hawkeye manual page:
