Greetings,
I considered reviving an old thread but thought it better to just start a fresh one since my question is a little different. Let me start with the background. I am replacing my engine in my 2004 Disco with a new top hat motor. When removing the old engine we noticed that it may have been replaced during the model year (2004) as it had the hd written indication on the bottom of the oil pan. Okay now here is the strange part. The engine removed was a 4.6 but it had the 4.0 flywheel on it. I am not sure why this would be. Some of the local club guys said that those motors were pulled to put in Disco warranty vehicles from Range Rovers. The engine has already been crated and sent back. Now the $64,000 question. Can I use that flywheel on my new engine?
I just checked the Rover V8 rebuild manual and it makes no mention of any differences in the flywheel between the 4.0 and the 4.6, so I would imagine that you are good to go, however, I have no actual practical experience with it.
Just to clarify, the rebuild manual is different than the RAVE and applies to Rover V8's in a variety of Land Rover products. I did a text search for "flywheel" and nowhere did it mention different dimensions, specs, or have different images for the 4.0 vs. the 4.6
I don’t know for sure but there could be a difference where TDC is for cylinder #1 on the keyway for the crank position sensor? Or maybe that that’s a function of how the flywheel mounts to the crankshaft to account for the shorter piston travel on the 4.0?
