Default found something weird in my engine today!

So I tore the heads off my wifes '99 d2 today and found something curious. the odo reads 135k, but the pistons are super clean on top, there is no lip in the cylinders at all, and I can still see the cross hatching from the cylinders being honed. . what are the chances this thing has a replacement motor? The gaskets were rover factory, but the intake had clearly been off before. I'm wondering if this thing has had a short block motor put in it? any thoughts? Any of you rover veterans have any ideas on what a 135k motor should look like? I shouldn't still be seeing honing marks, right?

Its original. That is common on Rover engines, they last forever and seeing the honing makes is not uncommon ever for a 200k+ engine.

Any engine will last forever if you keep throwing parts at it

I noticed the cross hatch on my 7 owner 188K well abused 97.

as for "Any engine will last forever if you keep throwing parts at it" - the marine industry takes that to new levels. The Maersk "Emma" is a giant container ship, and they can shut down one cylinder and change the 24 foot connecting rod while underway. Bet you need some hearing protection for that...

Lots of old Caterpillars, Deere, Mercedes out there that just keep running, with help, hour meters and odometers quit long ago. If you love it, it is worth it. Or if you a bound by budgets. At the Savannah port some forklifts have 20,000 hours on them.

I'll try to get some pics up. I was using a tiny amount of coolant. and I was getting some weird temp reading, not over heating but spiking out on the highway. has new radiator, good water pump, new motorad 180. good hoses. so short of a plugged heater core I was down to head gaskets. I didn't tell anyone that I was having a problem, and brother (d1 owner) said "dude I think I smell antifreeze in your exhaust".. so I said the hell with it and tore it down. glad I did I found lots of little things I wanted to fix.
