Default Four Jerry Cans on Safety Devices rack?

Thinking about storing four Jerry cans at the front of my roof rack. I've got OME heavy duty spings and the front of the rack is closest to the center of the vehicle. I would not do this all the time. There are places I like to go where fuel is scarce. Is this a horrible idea? if so, why. Thanks.

That is a lot of weight up high, which is going to make you fairly top heavy. Really not recommended. If your rack can take it and you are traversing basically flat forest service roads, you should be ok.

But challenging terrain or higher speed could be interesting.

I carry 2 x 20 liter non vented cans inside, one by each rear passenger window with the window cracked. It has not been a problem in 7 years, but you need to check the cap seal every time you use them and have spares.

Not ideal but I don't like weight up high.

I have considered popping the spare inside and building a rack on the spare tire mount, that stacks and rests on the bumper but that is a spring task.

This type of extra gas can looks interesting. Makes center of gravity for can/liquid lower and less likely to get snagged on something. Plus, if you mounted them down the center of your rack that would minimize load shift and balance load better.

If you already have regular jerry containers, I'd mount one to the rear door/ladder (if you have one) for off roading purposes. Carrying five gallons of fuel on my rear door during regular driving doesn't interest me, but for off roading...not a problem. I'm a cigar smoker...so carrying fuel inside is off the table.

Default Brian, what are you talking about?

Cigars and fuel go together just fine. I smoke a pipe on long drives and have similar concerns. Not sure what to do about the fuel thing. Other countries sell extended range gas tanks but not here. I would rather have it low than high. I carry a ton of gear in the rear already but may consider getting two on the rear and then just two up top. Not sure. Thanks for your input.

Cigar smoker too - with the no vent cans and GOOD seals not an issue - as long as you don't toss lit butts in the back
