Picked up a cylinder leak down tester today. Couldn't get it to thread into cyl 3, which is my focus point.
cyl 3 plug on the right, cyl 1 on left
noticed a fair amount of oil in the throttle body as well.
I'm thinking at this point I'll just tear the heads off. Might return the leak down tester and try a different one, but it seems unlikely to me that this cylinder doesn't have low compression.
I agree that it would be nice to knock out the codes one by one, however it's inevitable that it will need to be torn down, and at the very least need head gaskets.
Another thing to note, is the previous owner stripped out quite a few already repaired with heli coil head stud threads in the block.
I was able to drill them out and install time-sert inserts, but they didn't all sit flush and I had to grind them down with a Dremel. I'm thinking that my HG failure may be due to that, or at least a contributor.
Not sure if the block can be decked at this point, but hope to start tearing into it this week.
Yikes! If your labor is free keep going but otherwise I would start thinking about sourcing a different engine/block. BTW, that #3 plug looks like you are getting a lot of oil past the rings. Don't suppose you have a borescope?

fortunately, or unfortunately...my labor is free. Yeah, I'm guessing I'll need a different block but willing to put some hours into this one. The rings were new as well, I'd be suprised if they failed that quickly but obviously strange things can happen with motors that are made out of butter.
Whoa. Do you have any build pictures? Flex honed? Plastigauge? Studs or tty? Heads flat? Blowby? Cam and lifters? Timeserts are amazing but only if countersunk correctly.

I have some pics I could dig out if you want.
Cylinders were flex honed. Studs. Heads and crank were redone at reputable local shop, everything was within spec. Original cam and lifters. Those were the only things I didn't replace.
Very rare blow point, my guess is the head is not flat. Check that first.
Heads were redone at a local shop, but yeah, definitely will get them checked again. I'm guessing this is an issue with the block deck / my time serts install. Would be great if it was just the heads though.
Yeah your Timeserts are proud of the block. EZ out them and redo. Set them lower than the deck height.
Forgot to mention these are BIG SERTs, so not much aluminum to work with in the block. Holes had been previously helicoiled and previous owner pulled out the coils somehow. I'd rather not have to do any more drilling/tapping, I don't think this block is up for it. I think my best bet is to file down any that protrude. I did use a straight edge and they were flush. But worth another look.
