Default Front drive axle

I recently purchased a 99 Disco and I was told to immediately rebuild the drive shaft. When I inspected the shaft for grease fittings I found one on the shaft near the front and one on the front u joint. Is it still recommended that i rebuild?

Thanks

It's a 99 DII. Is the u joint with grease fitting standard?

Sounds like you have the OEM shaft. Mine is the same. PO says he replaced it last year but I'm not taking any chances on it. Who knows if/when it was greased. It's just a matter of time. Drive shaft is cheaper than a transmission!! Mine is coming out this weekend.

All the u-joints have to have grease fitting and must be greased once or twice a year or you are looking at a failure in the future which can include the replacement of the tranny.

The front shaft on the DII from the factory came with a grease-able front u-joint, and a blank on the shaft that can be removed, and a zerk put in to grease the shaft. It is the two rear joints that do not have grease fittings from the factory. These two rear joints are right next to the converter which bakes the grease from them. These two ungrease-able rear joints are what commonly fail, flinging the rotating drive shaft into the transmission case.

Standard procedure is to remove the front shaft and replace all three joints, along with the centering ball between the two rear joints. I removed mine, took it to a drive shaft shop (who only does race car axles, differentials, and drive shafts), handed him the shaft, three grease-able joints, and the centering ball. It was rebuilt and balanced by noon the next day. It is then very important to grease all fittings every oil change.
