Default Front output seal - yes or no lube

The RAVE says to fit dry but almost every write up says to put a bit of lube on it. What do you guys think? It's difficult to get in dry and I think I damaged mine. The truck has an odd sound, almost like clapping dice together now.

I'm about to replace mine also. If the RAVE specifies to fit it dry, then I'll probably try to fit it dry or mostly dry at least. If it is lubed it may give to oil somewhere that it can seep out at (like after you've opened a bottle of oil). Then again, it may work better if you lube it (like an oil filter).

This is probably not helpful at all, but that's my thoughts on the deal. If it sounds wrong then you will probably have to replace it again before it breaks something else.

Which output seal are you referring to?, I am assuming it's the front transfer box seal behind the output flange to the front shaft and diff. I am about to embark on an upgrade on my transfer box and will install the seals with a mild Loctite threadlock fluid instead principally to lock them in place and also prevent possible oil leaks.

What page of RAVE does it state that they should be installed dry without any lube?

they may mean to install them into the housing dry, but most seals require that they be wet on the shaft end on startup so as not to rip the dry seal.

Yes, it's the front output on the transfer box. Putting it in completely dry was a task. I'll find the page number when I get home. I may grab another seal and try again and at least lube the shaft end.

In the rave manual it is page 41-36, step 2. Also, is it needed to add any grease to the bearing before putting the seal back in?

The bearing is oiled from the diff fluid.
