Default Front prop shaft ?

Just acquired a 2000 D2 and have seen a lot of talk in here about rebuilding the front driveline. I decided to give this one a check and grease being I was under to change fluids. The RAVE manual specifies a lube point for the slip yoke but the was no zerk. That just wont do so I pulled the hex plug and stuck in a zerk. Is this the norm? This thing took a ton of grease. Probably not had anything since assembly. The front u-joint has a zerk but nothing on the 2 in the CV at the transfer case. What exactly seems to be the culprit in the prop shaft failure? Probably should just pull and replace all of the u-joints to be on the safe side but everything seems solid?

Thanks.

Default Just replaced mine

You'll find lots of threads on this very thing. I just changed mine this week because I started to feel a vibration that was new and peculiar. I crawled under there and could see the u joint on the "double" end was starting to come apart. Whew, nick of time! You'd be well advised to do this ASAP.

I replaced the u joints and the centering ball, all parts available locally, less that $75.00 total. (3 u joints and the centering ball).

Here's the write up I followed. https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=29302

I need to do this as well soon. I don't think it is something I want to do myself though. Seems like too much room for error, and I am new to touching this part of a truck. I'm wondering if there are good options for buying complete new units you just bolt on, and maybe send the old one back as a core. I would also have a shop do it, but unsure of local shops knowledge on these.

Most shops should do u-joints, they are not terrible to do on your own though. A vice, punches and BFH are good, a hydraulic press helps. If I were not going to do it myself I would just unbolt the driveshaft from the flanges on either end and take the shaft in to have a shop fit the joints and then bolt it back up. The thing I was wondering is if something other than the u-joints was failing, though I wouldn't think so.

Yes, pulling the plug and inserting a zerk to grease is the norm. If the two joints at the transfer case don't have zerks, pull it, and either rebuild it yourself, take it to an axle/driveline shop, or buy one with grease-able joints. I pulled mine and took it to a local guy that only does axles and drive shafts to get done. I supplied the parts, and the bill for the parts and labor came to maybe $175. It is then important to grease everything at every oil change.
