Front prop shaft rebuild questions...
Hey guys,
Dropped my front prop shaft at the drive line shop today and was informed by the tech there that the u-joints and centering ball are impossible to find? Thanks to this site and this thread: https://landroverforums.com/forum/ge...rebuild-29302/ I was able to track down the centering ball just fine. Not knowing till today that the u-joints are nowhere to be found, do I order just 3 of the u-joints listed in the link above and be done with it? Seems like an easy solution, surprised these guys can't find it on their own.

They are just too lazy to even look. I'd almost bet they have the Precision 344 in stock. I like the grease fitting in the cap, so I went with the Neapco 1-0005, both were available locally. Just give them the part number and they should be able to have from their usual suppliers in less than a day.
The oreilly store in your town, Novato, CA, has the precision 344 in stock.

At $25 a pop, the NEapco's are less than half the price at $11.99 each. Why Precisions over the other?

How prone are these cars to rear u-joint issues? Does the rear shaft have the same dire consequences as the front shaft?

Glad the thread helped.
Rear shaft doesn't cause the damage at failure the front does. But definitely make sure they (if you have two) are in good shape.
If only doing the front I'd order 4 in case they mess one up, or one is defective. They are cheap enough that it's worth having a spare. Actually I'd get enough to do all the u-joints (even if the rear seem ok) + 1. That night give you enough to qualify for free shipping.
Either Precision or Neapco, either is fine.

If you have no record of maintance on the u-joints, replace all 4, they are the same number and most part stores carry them for around $14. Make sure that all the parts say made in the U.S. otherwise you will get some of that made in China crap and they won't last.
Once installed, lube the joints and the slip shaft twice a year or every oil change.
