Default Fuel Filler Door: What's broken and how do I fix it?

The fuel filler door has been like this since I bought the truck. It's quite clear that the previous owner wasn't too handy with a wrench and didn't want to pay the LR dealer costs to have minor repairs done.

Exhibit A:

As you can see, the previous owner attempted to thwart this problem with velcro; I guess it's better than duct tape. However, I would like this returned to "factory spec." I don't know what it looked like before, so I'm wondering what parts need to be ordered and what is involved in the repair.

I've been unable to find anything in the RAVE yet, if someone can point me in the right direction, the deed would be much appreciated.

My DII has a little plastic clip on the gas door (2nd picture). It pops into the slot on the metal piece and it pinches that post in your third picture. It looks like you might just need the clip.

Did that piece look anything like this?

It wasn't quite as big, but yes, that's it. The split round thingie on the far left of the picture clips into the slot on the door. The post on the body then slides into the V formed by the two arms extending from the split round thingie.

The clip is the latching mechanism. Replace and close door without slamming after filling. That part is notorious for falling off if you force the door shut.

Part number ALR6949 (updated to) BPX700010.

I have changed mine twice already, they either break or fall off !!. TIP.....be VERY carefullwhen you fit your new one as even pushing it into the slot can break it, for this reason order a couple of them and have a few spare

... I broke it. I was careful, but the clip portion of it still broke. The round peg that fits into the filler door tab is still fine, and the piece works, but I'm not too confident that it will stay in place. Ill probably glue it in to make sure it stays.

For a truck that is reasonably well designed, I wonder who dropped the ball on this one?
