K & N air filter
Because it will kill your MAF.
K&N air filters use LESS filter element but then coat it with a light oil.
Less filter element lets more air through, better breathing engine more power...in theroy, I do not think this is true on fuel injected engines.
The oil traps the dirt because thedirt sticks to it, the filter must be washed, dried and then re-oiled every 10,000 miles. The extra oil that is on the filter element will drip off and collect inside the MAF and contaminat the sensor inside it.
A new MAF for a DII is around $150.

I use a K&N replacement filter in my Dodge and have not noticed any perceptible difference in horsepower. The K&N filtercharger injection performance kits actually make a noticeable difference in power. On my Dodge diesel it also removed all the baffling on the air intake and really made it sound cool when the turbo spooled up.
I think with the low power output from the Rover engine it would notice a power increase from the K&N filter but it's not worth risking destroying the MAF to find out.

Didn't do anything noticable for power on my DII. The cake of oil and dirt left behind killed the mass airflow sensor though...

I had a K&N on my Golf TDI, and I kept having to clean the MAF every time I changed the engine oil. I got rid of the K&N and no more problems. The Golf has a Bosch MAF, too I believe.
It is a cheap, half-a**Ed way of doing things, but electicl contact cleaner will clean out a MAF, and the can cost ony $5, vs the $130 for a new one.
So far, no MAF problems on my Disco, but I'm notusing a K&N filter.

Ran into the same issuse with K&N as described with an older BMW. I kept having issues with the air sensor and finally figured out it was the K&N oil. Electrical contact cleaner fixed the issues, but I have steered away from K&N on injected motors since.
