Default Fuel gauge not accurate

My fuel gaige has not been accurate lately. I just replaced the fuel pump, no better.

I was just below the halfway mark and it took 18.9 gallons. I have been reseting the trip odometer and filling about 220 miles. Strangely it seems to become more accurate the lower it goes. It seems the light comes on at the appropriate level. So sometime between half and nearly empty it corrects the read out.

Any ideas on what else could be causing the incorrect read?

The fuel gauge is driven by resistance to ground across the sender. If you have a poor connection in the wiring somewhere it will affect the reading that even a new pump will generate (I assume you got the pump/sender assembly and not just an actual pump). I haven't checked the ETM to know where the pump is getting its ground but it might be worth a look.

It seems to be a general issue with Discos. Many here have reported an inaccurate fuel gauge. My gauge is at exactly at half when 10 gallons are left only. When I top it up to the click of the pump I can drive 60 miles before the needle gets down to the full mark. It has been that way since I bought my Disco 6 years ago.

When installing the fuel pump you must get it seated into the little circle at the bottom of the tank. If it's not seated you can still get the pump to push down, but since it's not centered = fuel level readings are off. I'd personally try centering it again and see if it changes.

Default Alignment

That would make sense. In other cars there was a twist to lock the pump in place. I did not see or feel that in the Rover. There was nothing to ensure it was in the right place other than the compression of the gasket and the springs. Ill have to dig into it again.
thanks
