Default Fuel gauge stuck on 1/4 tank.

When I bought my truck the fuel gauge was stuck on 1/4, when full. It's been like that for ages. A new fuel pump was on my to do list. I put a can of seafoam thru my fuel system two times. It cleared the stuck gauge up. I'm throwing this out there because I could find no info on fuel gauge sticking and no fix other than replacing the pump.....

couldn't hurt to raise the rear carpet and check the fuel pump, could just be a hung up float.

I agree, remove the pump and check it first.
How many miles on the truck and was there another reason to replace the pump, if not don't spend the money on it for now cause there are plenty of things your 03 probably needs, have you seen my major service list, might be a good thing to tackle.

Hmm.. Maybe I wasn't clear. My fuel gauge had been sticking for years. I put seafoam in the tank x 2 and it started working. My 03 is up to snuff. All service done as recommended. I don't post much but have been here for a few years and follow the maintenance threads.... Power steering leak is all that I currently need to address. Everything else is good to go.

Thanks.

I believe he is saying that seafoam fixed his gauge that had been stuck for years.

Here's my take on it: Perhaps the float had become stuck at the 1/4 point on the sender due to varnish or something "icky" in the fuel that had been used in the vehicle and the various cleaning agents in the Sea Foam broke down and removed the varnish / ick so as to allow the float to begin moving again.

I am glad he posted this, as it is a much cheaper and easier potential fix than a complete fuel pump. I duly acknowledge that this is not a guaranteed fix for sending units, but well worth a try for the cost of two cans.

Next time that happens, run the over over a washboard pile of rocks.
The jostling may unstick the float.

If you have 120K miles or more - change the fuel pump and the float mech
to avoid the fuel pump failing and you are stranded.
