Default Gas Cap Switch Malfunction

The last time I got gas the switch that opens the gas flap malfunctioned and it is now behaving as though the switch is being permanently pressed. This means the gas flap will not latch; also the gas gauge stopped working which I'm assuming is related.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I've had a fair amount of electrical issues in the past, but this is the first that I can't let slide.

Q1 when you push the button inside does it work properly?

Q2 if yes to Q1 then just bend tab slightly to engage plunger.
Note: just don't overdo the bending... it should only take small amount.

cheers

Unfortunately no, when I press the button it doesn't make it's usual release sound, which is what makes me think it must be stuck in release-mode. Thanks for the advice though, I'll try it out just in case
