gas mileage/fuel economy

gas mileage/fuel economy
I've done a little searching and come up with little, so I thought I would drop a post in on my good disco brothers and sisters
Now, I know that Rovers aren't made for sipping gas. This I understood when I bought my 98 Disco with 125K miles and this I know now. Fuel economy when I bought it (at 124,600 clicks) was surprisingly adequate: 15-16 mpg highway and city combined, mostly highway.
Here is my problem:
gas mileage has been steadily slipping of late. I log every tank of gas - amount put in, miles driven, cost. So I know what I'm tracking here. First several tanks - 14-16ish. Next few 13-14ish. Last 4-5 tanks? 12-13ish [&:]and the last two 11.49 and 11.91. [sm=wtf.gif]
Here's what I think: the Mule needs a thorough tune up - not just the basic plugs plusair and fuel filters, but alsowires. AND should I clean the MAF with non-chlorinated brake cleaner like so many do with other vehicles? And maybe pull out the O2 sensors and do the same? Any plug/wire suggestions? What gap on the plugs is optimum?
I'm pretty long in the tooth on vehicle tinkering, but I'm pretty new to the Rover world. Are there other tricks on tune ups for these rigs that a guy needs to think about? 'Cause I can live with 13-16 mpg, but this sub 12 monkey businesshas got to GO! [:@][sm=smiley35.gif]

RE: gas mileage/fuel economy
With your mileage, it is pretty certain you need to go thru and do a good tune. DO NOT try and clean the MAF especial when you don't have a check engine ligt stating it is bad, and even more so never use anything but electrical contact cleaner if you don't want to buy a new MAF.
O2 sensors can not be cleaned, at your mileage they need to be replaceed.
Go the the Disco fluid section on this section and read the list of items to look at on a major.
Also replace your fuel filter, flush the engine, do an induction cleaning and clean the t/body.
