2000 D2 with 111K mels gets me constantly 13 in city, 16 on highway.
But, my numbers may be low, as I always wear special heavyright shoewith a lead sole [sm=badbadbad.gif]

I get 14.5mpg combined in my 99 D2 with 118K miles. My driving is probably 65% highway. Unfortunately, here in CA, if you are not going at least 75-80mph, you better be in the slow lane, and our slow lanes suck due to constant merging traffic and rough road conditions. I tried tolerating the slow lane and keeping it at 65 for a couple tanks, got 15.5mpg. Decided it was not worth it.

Hi,
One other thought; have you changed out your air filter lately? Another cheap thing that most folks don't do that often. Also you can keep your tires inflated near the high PSI mark, that should yield close to 1 - 1.5MPG....
Synthetics will help a bunch too, just don't go changing them before your scheduled time or seems to me you'd waste some money there

Interesting thread for me ...a fairly new owner of a '01 Disco. One question I'd like to hear answered from you all is what octane to use. The manual says 92. Is it necessary now to run that high of an octane or can I use mid-grade or regular? Many thanks.

Opinions on this onevary, but I have always been using Regular Unleaded 87 Octane. It is driveable, and if one avoid heavy acceleration, the engine is fine. And yes, $ 6.00 difference per fill-up is enough motivation for me to run the engine more cautiously.

Yes, the engine is conceived to run premium. If you do not you'll have poor performance and worse milleage. So the price of super versus regular pays for itself.
OK....so I'm confused......whatkind of harmcould using 87 Octane do to the Disco???? I always thought that there was no choice....if ya owned a Disco...ya HAVE to use premium gas.....???

I knew my post will create controversy. I have had 95 D1, 97 D1 and now 2000 D2. The 3.9L 95 did have a problem with using 87 octane, but the 4.0 97 D1 and 4.0 2000 D2 are justfine. This is my opinion and I am not trying to convince anybody to follow it. I do not get a poor gas mileage and yes, I can rebuild my own engines, if something goes wrong. For anybody that depends dearly on hired wrench to work on their car, it would be a better choice to follow what the manual says.[sm=trust_me.gif]
