I can't believe this thread. Guy's..(and Gal's)....These are Land Rovers,not average commuter vehicles.The are full time four wheel drive V8 powered,heavy,built like a locomotive Land Rovers...real ones! Yes,they drink gas like a 5 ton U haul,but look how these trucks are built!...like a bloody tank.I hate plucking those twentys from my wallet everytime I fill up as much as everyone else,but that is to be expected when you own one of these units.Yes,there are ways to make these vehicles a little more economical,but don't start running cheap gas.If you can't handle the extra $6 per tank for premium,than maybe you should consider a more economical vehicle.Seriously Guys(and Gals),these are expensive trucks to run and I can't figure out for the life of me why some of you even own one.I don't mean to offend anyone,it's truly not my intent.

 

I agree with newfoundlandrover 100%. You can't own a vehicle that is synonym with upper class and prestige without at least treating it as it was designed to. If it's made to run with premium, so be it. If your too cheap to fill it up with the intended gas, get something that runs on cheap gas. And you know what???? as I've said on my previous post...you'll go further with premium than with regular, so it doesn't cost you anything to run premium.

If on the other hand you want to save money at the pump, then get the spark plug wires and other things ( that actually work)that will enhance your mileage. Don't get me wrong, I, like you, am not impressed with the fuel mileage that I'm getting. That is why I'd rather spend money on things that will enhance the m.p.g and at the same time the well being of my vehicle. It might take me a year if not morein saving gas to make up for the money spent on fuel saving additives and add-ons. ButI'dratherspend ittherethan giving my money to those robbing assh$%?* that are the gas companies.

P.S. By additives and add-ons, I mean synthetic oils in the tranny, t-case and axles, and spark plug wires with good plugs with perfectly working exhaust and O2 sensors. And in my case...K&N air filter. I've heard about the MAF thing, but until I blow it once, I'll run one because I really enjoy the mid range power that I noticed after installing it.... I don't mean the crap like those tornado things and magnets and all the other false claim gadgets.

 

Well, I thought it was an interesting thread whether Newfoundland does or not lol. I'm not offended in the least, but I don't necessarily consider a Land Rover to be an upper class vehicle. I consider it to be a good work horse for what I need ...off road, bad roads and bad weather plus two dogs, guns and fishing rods. My last Disco was a rust bucket of a '91 (you know, the ones with the silly painted arrows on the sides?) but it ran on diesel (UK) and was very easy to maintain. With the nightly news warning us daily of higher and higher gas prices, it seemed like a reasonable question to ask ...and it got answered for which I thank folks.

So here's my 2 cents and my resulting question:
--As said above these are purpose built tanks, they drive like it, they perform like it, and we all bought them because of it. So no more belly aching about mileages that are more than about 10-15% off of these numbers.
--Ok, now I am going to belly ache for a moment and want to hear if anyone else is seeing what I am as the dealer keeps telling me that my situation is "completely normal" and I just don't buy it. 2003 DII SE (the 4.6 motor) I drive about 40% highway and 60% city, I'm not heavy on the right pedal yet I'm only seeing 240 miles per FULLtank of gas (I run mid-grade in it). this works out to an average of what 10.5?

I bought the '03 new then sold it to my mom after a few months, I just bought it back from her about 5 months ago. I don't recall the mileage being this bad when I had it originally. 55k miles.

 

Run a bottle of injector cleaner through and always run premium.

 

Newfoundlandrover: I am the PROUD FEMALE owner of a Disco II......after reading other threads, I realized I was not getting the fuel performance as everybody else.....I am only getting between 120-130 miles per FULL tank. It's not a money issue by no means, I could fill up everyday if need be, but when I read that most folks are getting between 300-350 miles per tank, then I thought it might be wise to ask if there was some type of maintenance i should have done to better it. I was VERY aware what I was getting myself into when I bought the vehicle. The salesman was very honest with me about the expense this vehicle can generate as far as maintenance and repairs!!! Just wanted to clarify myself, being that I am the one who started this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too in no way consider the LR to be an upper scale vehicle. I did some research on them before buying but mostly bought into the Royal British Hype surrounding the things.

It suffers from excessive wind noise in the front, the interiorsounds like a baby's rattle, the cup holders in the front won't hold anything bigger than a cup of tea (when you can get them out). The thieves at the dealership wanted over $500 for an alternator! Which I found for an also overpriced $250 at the parts store.

I thought the transmission was coming through the floor last night while on the highway (as I read of so many crappy transmissions out here I was expecting it). I limped it home and found that the half-assed aluminum foil covered cardboard "heat shield" was lodged between the drive shaft and CAT making a hell of a racket. This thing has a V-8 and can't get out of its own way.

You guys like to call these vehicles a truck. That's so cute. I also own a Ford F-350 that could carry a Discovery in the bed with room left over. That's a truck. These LR's are barely cars.

Oh, and I got a little over 16 MPG during 7 hours of highway driving.

 

My 03 SE with 44k gets 12.8 MPG with her driving to and from work in traffic- when I drive I get 13.8-15 - no traffic, lots of highway and curvy back roads.

 

Ok, I'll stop complaining. At least I'm not seeing 120 to a tank. Crap that would drive me nuts.
