Default Gearbox change

Hi,

I have a Disco 200 Tdi '93 and big gearbox problems...

I was offered a gearbox of a Range Rover Classic 88'.

Does anyone knows if it's possible to change one for the other ?

Are they compatible ?

Does anyone already made a similar change ?

Sugestions wellcome.

Regards,

Antunes

Is yours a manual or automatic? The automatic transmission is the same on the Discovery I and Range Rover Classic. What year is your discovery?

Hi,

It's manual as well as the Range Rover.

My Disco is from 1993 and the Range Rover from 1988.

I know the automatic transmission is the same on both disco and rr classic. I have not been able to find any information about the manual transmissions though. Have you tried the service manual?

They are probably both probably LT77's, which were first used about in about '83 and last used in '94. But the vehicles being at the beginning and end of the production years one or the other may not be.
However, there were a number of improvements made to the LT77 during their lifetime and your Disco would have the "new and improved" model. So you'd actually be going backwards as far as reliability is concerned.
If I were in your position, I'd look for a good used R380. If you're in the UK maybe check with one of the transmission specialists like Ashcroft. I think they will sell you a rebuilt R380 using your LT77 as a core, albeit with a surcharge.

Hi,

Thanks for the sugestion.

I'm from Portugal, so buy a gearbox in UK and send it to Portugal and send back the old one to UK it's not easy and cheap...

If I was at UK everything would be easier

One of my other problems is €€€€

For the moment I will try the old LT77 from the Range Rover as it costs me nothing and if does not work ... well I will try to get another one but will have to wait some time....

Many Thanks

Antunes
