Getting into the fun stuff- Front end/Tie rods/steering box and upgrades
My disco 2 has been on the road now for 6 weeks, after 2 years of sitting. In the past 6 weeks, I've changed the plugs and wires to 8mm magnecores w/ Bosch plat +4s, new serpentine belt, rebuilt propshaft, new air filter, seafoam induction cleaning, cleaned the IACV (which was stuck open and throwing codes), cleaned the TB, changed the oil and filter, flushed the coolant, and changed the gear oil in both diffs and T-case. The car has never run better, and after 130 miles, I'm throwing no codes except for the SRS. Took it down to get inspected, failed b/c of the SRS light and the front end. Mechanic at the inspection place told me I needed to replace my tie rods, and that my airbag needed to be serviced. I have struggled with the SRS light before, LR dealer told me the sensor on the hub was bad, and I needed a whole new hub. I've looked into it, and it seems the sensor on the hub can be replaced without replacing the whole hub. Further, I have already checked the tie rods visually, and shook the wheel back and forth, and there is some play in the wheel, plus one boot is a bit cracked, so I suppose the tie rods should be replaced. Here are my questions-
1. Can the sensor on the hub be replaced w/o replacing the whole hub? I found a service bulletin which says that is what should happen, so why is LR telling me to replace the whole hub?
2. I'm replacing my leaking steering box next week, and will do the tie rods at the same time. I've looked at TREs online, seems some have grease fittings and some do not. My OEM TREs do not have grease fititngs. What is the best option for TREs, and where should I get them from?
3. While I'm replacing the box and TREs, are there any upgrades I should be aware of that might be a good idea to do at the time? I see places selling reinforced drop arms, drag links, etc. Are these worthwhile upgrades? The whole steering linkage is very low on the truck, are there ways to raise it up to give it more clearance?
Thanks very much in advance.
