Going Full Synthetic
Going synthetic on a 02' DII is a total waste of money. This vehicle was produced using 30 year old General Motors technology. Sticking to regular mineral oil changes will be the least of your worries.
Going synthetic ABSOLUTELY, this is one of the best and least expensive things to can do for any vehicle you care about. I put synthetic in ever thing I own ( two LRs, one Miata and GM truck), and when I say I use Synthetic I mean I put in everthing that moves. THe engine, the gear box (standard or auto)differentials, and swivels. My diso Has just turned over 350,000 KM the Miata has 250,000KM the GM has over 300,000 also, and I don't know what my TDI 90 has done, because it is XMOD.
What kind is up to you .
Just stick with the right ratings ( GL-5 / GL-4 ) for the diffs
Iam not sure on the tranfer case what a Disco II runs.
I run my Disco very hard so I do not care about the few extra bucks it cost.
The technology is very old so it needs all the help we can give it.

You will be okay either way some people swear by synthitc, which it does have its advantages. If you use dino oil at least use good quality, stay away from things like penzoil and quaker state (my opinion). Also a godd filter it gonna be your main concern.
All motor oil sold in the States is tested by the API ( American Petroleum Institute ). You can choose to buy designer motor oil and sponsor race cars. You can also choose to buy API rated oil. No difference, same rating, less cost.
