Will Tillery can get you everything you need. http://www.roverguy.com/
He's always breaking apart Rovers.
He knows Rovers and can advise you well.
Sounds like you need a new-used axle housing, should be pretty cheap.
A used steering gearbox won't be a lot.
A couple tie rods and 4 ends. I'd be surprised if it all costs you $500.

I vote for Dana's and a new steering box. 44's are good, 60's are even better!

Why? When he can fix his with just a used axle housing? He didn't indicate he needed anything beefier.

I have bought from Will Tillery The Rover Guy, he is a very good source at excellent prices.

Also, I know I have seen a used front axle for a DI on RoversNorth.com in their SPECIALS section of their website. They do handle mostly new parts but have a few pages of various used major parts at discounted prices.

Just make sure you look at anything you buy used, especially a Land Rover Discovery. Don't give up without giving it a good effort!!!!

Hey Buzz, I live in Keller. All Import Auto Parts is on Handley Edderville Rd off Carson and 121. They have 3 D1's and I know at least 1 of them has the front steering and suspension under it. The steering gearboxes are gone, but there is 1 on Ebay right now for $175 including shipping and warranty. There is also a guy up in McKinney with 2 D1's he is parting out. I just picked up a new master cylinder, headlight and some trim from him this morning.

can you give us a shot of that supposed bent axle tube. Cause if it was it wouldn't really run straight and grind a way.

sounds like a misdiagnosis.

You can have a bent axle tube and not notice it without measuring, Or in the case of one of my Series Rovers, installing a 1/2 shaft.

Thanks for the info. How do I get in contact with the guy in McKinney? I think I found the steering box at a yard in Nevada (north of Wylie) for $125. I need to go look at it to verify. Just waiting on some income.

I don't have a way of getting it up high enough to get a good pic (I'm living in an apartment right now with stuff in storage, moving to a house in a month). I will hopefully be able to get it up on jack stands once I move and see what the heck is going on.
