Default Good progress and a question or two...

Ok, as some of you know, I decided to take the hillbilly route, and attempt to repair the hole in my transmission with JB Weld. I had to remove the valve body to get all the loose shards of aluminum that were still in there, and to have room to work. I started last night, and got the hole about 2/3rds repaired. I quit at dark, went to work this morning, and when I got home, went to repairing the rest of the hole. I used 1 1/2 sticks of JB Weld, and here is what it looks like:

Here is the before:

And here is after:

Now, there is some finishing to do, filing the edge down, and making sure the pan will seal correctly, but the hole is patched!!!

Ok, a couple of questions. Does anybody know if transmission fluid is good for an open wound or hair? I sliced my finger open with a potato peeler (for the love of God, don't ask how or why), and the transmission fluid has soaked through the band aid. Also, I laid my head right into a giant puddle of it that gathered underneath the rover over night. I wonder if it'll change my hair color or something. LOL. On to the serious business.

Once I get this pan back on, what is the procedure to fill the transmission? I keep hearing about a pump. I noticed what appeared to be a plug hole on the front of the pan. Is that it?

Any tips are very greatly appreciated!

Ok, as for getting ATF inside your body...dont worry about it, if you were constipated you wont be now.
As for the hair, just wash it good and dont use the white towels.
As for filling it, there are two plugs, on drain plug and one fill plug, the fill plug is the one above the drain plug.
Buy a cheap fluid hand pump and fill the trans until full, replace plug.
Start the truck and shift through ALL the gears holding each one for a few seconds, do this twice.
With the truck in park and the engine running remove the fill plug and put in more fluid until it starts to come out.
Replace plug.
Drive it for a day and then recheck the fluid level.

being that it ran dry, once you start in adn fill, give it a second to make sure you have purged all of the air out....

I am going to file that edge down a little bit and make it smooth. Hopefully the rubber gasket makes good contact with that JB weld. I might take some more and make the bottom edge a little more broad if it leaks. It was a PITA to get that valve body lined up right. I couldn't believe that I didn't lose any of the screws, and that they all got back into their correct holes, lol!

I would also make a point of changing the fluid a second time to make sure you get as much of the metal shaving out from the inner working of the tranny so no additional damage is done.

Yeah I have been checking the archives and that has been the most common tip is to drain and refill after a day or two, so it looks like I'm buying ATF III in bulk, lol!

Heh, You never know. They always tout the effectiveness of this stuff on the packaging. Who knows, maybe they'll give me a decal to stick on the fender and a couple hundred bucks. LOL!! That would be sweet.

I was going to put the transmission pan on today but my girlfriend woke me up all pissed off about the cable company jerking us around. Then I couldn't get back to sleep. Well, about noon, I laid down to take a little nap, screwed around and over slept. Now I gotta be to work in about an hour. So the pan is going to have to wait until tomorrow. I'll get 10 quarts of the cheap stuff, if it goes, run it for a day or two, and flush it out with the good stuff.
