Default Got my CDL T-case

Alright, so i got a CDL T-case off ebay, and it arrived today. I was planning on doing some sort of resealing to it, just to prevent leaks in the future, while it is out.

I have found this one, but i do not think that it includes the gasket or seal that holds on the bottom cover.

This one from Toddco

Any ideas of what i should do to this T-Case before i put it in?

Also am i missing a clip and two bolts that go right around the nipple?

Default do a little reasearch

You need to do a little reasearch.. I found seal kits as well as full reuild bearing kits for $300.00. i replaced mine as i had a bearing whining on deceleration. The transmission guy who changed mine out told me he would never do another discovery again.. It was a royal pain in the *** he said. the thing is heavy as crap. Do you know for sure that it has no problems? You should start looking for someone so you can have it checked out for peace of mind... I wouldnt want to do twice....

Good luck and keep us updated, Chris

Yea, i am going to take it to a place, on the military base that i am stationed on, that has full lifts and transmission jacks, so the weight shouldn't matter so much. I don't know for sure that it has no problems but it was sold as fully operational, got it off ebay and the guy had hundreds of positive feedbacks.

Thanks for the feedback so far, and anyone else have any input?

You are going to need the linkage pivot piece that fits on the shaft in the middle of those three (or one in this case) bolts, and the nut that secures the linkage pivot piece. This is what the linkage rod (DI) or cable (04 DII) connects to on the transfer case.

The two missing bolts are what secures the cable bracket on an 04. I assume whomever pulled this unit unbolted the cable from the case, left the cable, bracket, and pivot with the vehicle, and didn't return the two bolts to the case.

Have you already purchased a shifter? If not, and you're getting one from a salvage yard, ask nicely, and they might send you the shifter, cable, bracket, pivot, and nut complete (and maybe the shift handle and boot if you ask really nicely). That's how mine came - complete - but I had a good prior relationship with the salvage yard I got mine from.

Jason, try La Paz or Japan Tech in the Otay Mesa area, Japan Tech in on Energy Way. La Paz is off of Heritage Road. Japan Tech has two rovers, one is a 97 that should have all of the linkage that you are looking for. La Paz has a dozen or so Discoverys, including several DIs that should have the linkage. Tapatio 3 also had several Discoverys. Tapatio 3 is located near La Paz off of Heritage Road. Good luck. Phil

Thanks for the heads up LJ, is there any way to find out in the future what these places have land rover wise? Or do you just know off hand? Also the 2000/2001 tcase is a direct swap in the 2002, right? I am just gonna swap the whole thing, more work but less chance of messing things up. Thanks again for the input everyone.

I pulled the large inspection plate as well as the small one on the side and removed the factory rubber seal with a plastic putty knife. Then put a 1/4" bead of Permatex Good Stuff "make a gasket" around the plate and bolt holes. NOT a drop of gear oil since. (knock on wood)

I am in your same boat. I have a 2004 CDL transfer case with 18.5k on it I bough on eBay about a year ago. I have sealed it as stated above and and the T-case currently installed in my 2003. I now have the input/output seals to replace. Now I need to get brave and drop the old one and put in the new one. I have the D1 linkage and shifter with ****, that I also scored on eBay. I'm waiting to see if I can get the 04 linkage for a deal. It would mean not bending the 1\4" steel rod. And probably less cussing.
Have you looked at the RAV? I think you have to drop the Y pipe and front support cross brace.

Here is a good like to familarize you with the install.

Alright, so i took of the large inspection plate and i found out the reason i couldnt find the gasket last night no matter how hard i looked is because it is RTV / Silicone. That simplifies things. I am going to order that seal kit from toddco and re-do the seals that are easy enough to get to. Thanks for the help!
