Default Greasable U-Joints

I know this has been posted before but I'm going to ask again. I have an '03 Disco that does not have greasable u-joints. My Rover is a second vehicle used mostly on the beach and light trails. What suggestions are out there for replacement greasable u-joints. AND for us donks, why is greasable important?

Thanks all.

The theory is that the front drive shaft runs right next to the catalytic converter, which bakes all of the grease in the joint. The joints have no grease zerks and therefore no way of replacing the baked grease. Also, that driveshaft apparently has odd angles on it (the front angle should be = and opposite to the rear, but on the LR they are not) making any vibrations worse. That weird double cardan joint on the rear of the shaft is suppost to solve this butit doesn't completely. So, no grease = friction = heat and stress = boom.

I think the ac dumps water on the shaft too, which can get into the joints and make a sticky mess.

Bottom line, if you don't get greasiable u-joints and your drive shaft fails, you are looking at a $7000 repair. So what do you think, pay under $200 and get them replaced or go out and stimulate the economy when they fail.

If I buy them, who can change them out?

You might have fun with the all tune and lube on this one. Take it to them and see what they think. It isn't too hard if you have done one and have the right tools. If they don't want to touch it, see if there is a driveline shop near you, but if I remember right, you are in the middle of BFE....

Labor to replace the 2 u-joint should be about $120 plus the parts. I usually recommend a transmission shop but hey, any mechanic who has done them before will work.

My '03 has 60k miles, and I noticed a veryfaintwhine when I bought it coming from the t-case area. The whineis now completely noticable, and I'm getting high-speed vibration. The Guibo looked good, and then I started hearing about U-joints on this board. I should have replaced those U-joints already, but Iwas distracted by the coolant and oil leaks. Now that I am leak free I'm going to change out all three u-joints on the front shaft and see if that is what is causing this.

I just went on an 800 mile round trip, if it is those u-joints I'm pretty lucky for them to not have failed and asploded my tranny.
