If the chrome on the swivel ***** is in good shape, as well as the seals, and you have a drain plug on the bottom of the housing (you don't say what year Disco you have) then gear oil works well as you can easily change it after wading, or with your regular change of diff fluid. It's a bitch to get the grease out.

was it '96 when they eliminated the drain plug & factory one-shotted them?

my '97 does not have drains, but did have oil.

I filled with one shot and jb'd my swivels two years ago.

I can't remember which year they switched. But if someone wants to use oil, they can drill, tap and fit drain plugs to the swivel housings if they don't already have them.

 

My disco is a 1998. Looked at the chrome and it looks good. Didn't see drain plugs, but they may be there as I just took a glimpse at chrome ball. The oil may not need changing. I have 85k miles.

 

I have a 97 series disco with 140km on it. What kind and what size of socket do i need to remove the '4 point' bolt. Apparently, it stuck and i'm having problem removing them.

 

1/2" (I think) 8pt.

 

would it round out the bolt since its a 'square bolt' fill in plug?

 

D2's use ball joints instead of swivel pins/bearings, one less thing to worry about

 

Take your 1/2" OPEN END WRENCH and use the OPEN end on the nut, you may need to clean the threads alittle with a cleaner, like carb or brake cleaner.
Make damn sure nothing falls inside the hole once you get the nut out, get dirt in there and your CV joints will go south quick.
