greasing the drive shaft
The front shaft must last longer than you think. My car has 140,000 miles and these appear be the original shafts. I admit I don't know the car's history except I bought it with a blown head gasket and multiple warning lights ( repaired now )
From the comments here, I'm guessing its the front drive shaft that fails. And per a couple of comments the "updated" shaft has 3 u joints.
I'm going to start looking for an updated front shaft.

It will come a greased up! Just pull yours and install your new! Grease every oil change to keep things lubed up.
Until you see that, you're not done.
Hi Disco Mike, if it's not too much trouble, can you email me that PDF you spoke about for rebuilding the front drive shaft, complete with good u-joint P/Ns? Much appreciated in advance!
