Default Grinding noise

Hellox I have a 2003 landrover discovery with 175k. I bought it when it had around 125k. I was driving yesterday and the red light came on briefly the trans light I guess means hot oil. So I get home and all of the sudden I hear loud grinding noise and when I put it in reverse it jumps.

1. Could this just be out of trans oil?
2. Could this be ball bearings?

any suggestions would help

Check that you don't have a huge leak. I am not sure on Discovery 2, but that should be a trans temp warning light.

1. Yes it could be, but that means your trans is probably destroyed
2. If it sounded one way before, and now it sounds different, this is not good.

Get it towed to your mechanic or rover friend.

Have you ever changed or checked the trans fluid? You can remove the fill plug and get a sample of the trans oil, see if it looks or smells burned. Granted, like mentioned above...if you are hearing a strange noise...most likely it is trashed.

Doesn't that temp warning light also cover the transfer case?

Some D2's also have a temp sensor on the Transfer Case as well, so I'd check the TC fluid and transmission fluid for sure. I got a 500.00 D2 due to a blown out TC, and when I went to remove it maybe 1 or two drops of burnt 80/90w came out..

If it's the transmission it's not the end of the world, you can get another transmission for around 300-400.00 online, and if it's the transfer case you're looking at anywhere from 200-350.00.

I only ask as my old D2 would leak a bit from the transfer case don't know that anyone other than me ever put fluid in it. That thing was thirsty.

Yep a D2's TC loves to seep. I've switched to 85/140w and it helps.

I've bought 2 04's in the past and one previous owner bragged on the TC not leaking. Got it home and maybe 1/2 a quart came out!!!!!! I make it a point to check a TC every 6 months. 99-02 are easier to do with the HP22 as it positions the TC drain out of the way of the TC cross-member vs vs 03-04's with the HP24 that makes it a little harder to get the drain plug out. I use a long 1/2 breaker bar from HF on the 03-04's, but I can use a ratchet with an extension on the 99-02's no problem. For the fill plug on either one I use a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter and smaller/thinner 3/8 extensions vs 1/2 as it's a tight fit.
