Default Grinding at wheels when turning

Hello all,
I was hoping you could tell what is making grinding noise at the wheel hubs on my turns. When I turn left, the noise comes from the front left. When I turn right, it comes from the front right. It sounds like gears meshing. The tighter the turn, the worse. On gas, worse then off gas.
I'm guessing its where the axle meets the hub. If so, what fails there? The axles or the wheels? What parts do I need?
Thanks,

sound like a CV joint. remove wheel and spin by hand to see if there is any resistance or noise.

Thanks NiteTrain,
Ever do this job? I can't tell from the Rave Manual how hard it is. If I have replacement axle shafts with CV, it looks like it could be pretty easy. Of course, most of these jobs look easy in the book.

never have replaced one on a rover but I have on a grand cherokee with CVs. I just replaced shaft and all to make it easy...except that route is not easy on the checkbook..you can rebuild the CV joints but that would require a lot more work.

so with replacement axles, you just remove the wheel assembly and slide out the axle shafts, replace and button it up?

This job is not hard but it is time consuming take your time make sure you have all the parts, gaskets, hylomar, grease packs etc. And you'll have a good install I have rebuilt my series 3 all new parts & disco1 no problems just follow the rave or the factory manual its easy once you get into it.

before you order parts jack up each front wheel and with the truck supported with jack stands, grasp the wheel at 12/6 and try to move it if you have play then the front wheel bearings are bad,
Then do the 3/9 position and check the tierods.
Also inspect the frame to see if the wheels are hitting it at full lock there should be rub marks, if so then the steering stops at each hub should be readjusted to limit the turn of the wheels.
Grasp the wheel and with a helper hold the other wheel and the front driveshaft see how much front to back you get on the CV joints

Thanks guys. I actually finished up last night. One of the CV joints was broken. Not sure if I am using the correct terms, but it seemed that the race of one of the CV joints was broken and a ball bearing popped out. Replaced axles with some godd used ones and all is good.

I checked the wheel bearings while I was at it, everything looked fine.

I am replacing the TRE's in the next couple of weeks. I have no idea how old the current ones are, I will just feel better with new ones on.

Mrmerlin, hows the hunt for the 04 going?

I think I am going to have to get a 2001 0r 02 and then convert the transfer to CDL
