Default "Grunching sound from steering when making a quick right hand turn

2003 D2 with 174000K. Since buying it 3 years ago, the power steering has always made a grunching sound whenever I rapidly cranked the steering wheel to the right after backing out of my driveway. Its not that moaning sound that power steering units make when the low side hose is leaking,....although it is a bit similar,.....lower pitched. I have driven one other Land Rover that I was looking at that did the identical thing,...so thinking this is not uncommon. This morning, I noticed that it did it when making a rapid turn to the left when entering traffic.

Anyone else experienced this?

Suggestions?

I've had that happen. I think it is air in the pump. The only way that I've found to get it out is to raise the front of the truck and turn the wheels lock to lock a few times.

How much do I need to raise it? Just on jackstands (4-6"?) or do I need to find a big boulder or something to drive the front of the truck up and lift it 2-3 feet?

A boulder or a low slung Subaru would be much more fun than jack stands but you only need the tires off the ground so you can turn them quick without stressing the gears.

My 1997 did that for years. Just once in the morning.
My 2001 started to do that too.
Just the first thing in the morning once a day and never after that.

Sigh.
Don't worry about it.

Worry about convincing yourself to run a mile on the treadmill.
That's what I will do.
