Default headlamps of parked Disco mysteriously turn on

Hello all,

My 99 Disco2 has been undriven and parked in my driveway for a couple of weeks (doors locked and lights switched off) for a couple of weeks.

The other night I noticed the headlamps, alone, were on. I confirmed that the headlight switch was still in the off position. Turning the headlight switch on made the headlamps brighter (normal) but turning the switch off didn't turn them off.
I was able to start the engine now problem.
I noticed the red light on my key was blinking.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks,

Thomas

Rovers demand attention. It was just your truck's way of getting you to spend some time with it.

She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

I wish I could help, but you need a catholic priest, tons of holy water, and permission from the Vatican to perform an exorcism. Linda Blair knows what I'm talking about...

Ok, now for some help. I have never heard of the problem, but I'm guessing you have a BECM related issue.

If it were my truck I would disconnect the battery, put a floor mat over it to isolate from the cables, then run a jumper cable(single) from the positive to the negative cable on the truck. A few minutes should work, but do 20 to be sure.

This is sometimes call a hard reset and will drain any residual power in the system and reset and learned behavior/memory. Upon re connecting the computers will all cycle and run "diagnostics" thus resetting the system.

Good luck finding a priest to perform the exorcism.

And since we are all making jokes, you could just drive your train... Couldn't help it.

i had the same thing happen in a f150 it turned out someone had installed an electric start some time in its past.

and for whatever reason the truck would on occasion turn on, maybe a neighbors, phone, garage door remote, I just disconnected it after finding out I had one.

i did read an article say these new smart thermostat are causing problems with some other electrical thing that run at around the same mhz.

From the manual:

Headlight courtesy delay

When locking the vehicle, the remote handset
can be used to illuminate the headlights for 30
seconds. At night this will make it easier for you
to unlock the garage, or walk to your house in
safety. Operate this feature at the same time as
you lock the car, by keeping the handset LOCK
button pressed for more than 2 seconds (the
doors lock and alarm system arms in the usual
way).
To extinguish the lights before the 30 second
illumination period has expired, press the lock
button again.
Either a remote is sending a lock signal at random, or you've a BCM issue.

Thanks all.

RacerX and Abran:
Since the red led on my key was blinking whenever I noticed this happening, do you think that rules out a BCU problem?

Regardless it's time for me to replace the remote on my key anyway.

Thanks again.

Thomas

P.S. yes my Disco2 is a demanding and jealous mistress...

Better than that, we've figured out your issue.

If you've any soldering skills, you can just replace your lock micro switch on the remote and call it a day.
