Default Headlight Basics?

Would love to have your help regarding my Disco 2 headlights.

#1: what's the step by step guide for aiming the lights? My low beams seem aimed just a tad too high for traffic.

#2: Do the OEM high beams have ballasts?

Often, when I hit the high beam switch, the illumination is identical to the low beams, just from the other 2 headlights.

Every once in a while, however, the high beams will turn on amazingly bright! Fantastic illumination!

Your truck sounds like a 'facelift' type if separate beams.

There is an adjuster for beam height on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

Regards the other problem, it sounds as though you have an electrical defect possibly the stalk switch.

If you look at top of headlight assembly, will see 3 bolts, 2 of them hold the headlight in place 3rd one adjust's it higher or lower,
-When you say high Beam becomes brighter sometimes, is the bulb lite & it becomes brighter & less bright , or it's your observation from inside cabin,
(If from inside cabin observation only,) could be light coming on at times & off other times,

No LED Headlight bulbs are DOT approved. If you live in a state with a decent state inspection you'll fail, also you run a pretty good risk of getting a ticket at night as the D2 Headlight housing was never designed for HID or LED lighting so it actually puts out massive glare to oncoming motorist.

Just get you some nice quality PIAA Bulbs and have your headlight aim checked/adjusted.

Thanks. I looked but there is just a blank plastic piece covering where that switch would be located.

Lights work...just sometimes really bright (perfect!) and other times the high beams shine no brighter than the low beams.

What Best said. Do not do this. On top of being illegal, it's legitimately dangerous to oncoming traffic and you have significantly decrease visibility in the rain, snow, and especially fog because the glare bounces back at you.

If you want HIDs then do the correct retrofit with projectors.

UPDATE: I took out the headlights and examined them today. First, a prior owner had installed super bright LEDs into...the low beams. Grrr...

So I swapped the aftermarket LEDs into the high beams. Nice. Now I'll try them out tonight and adjust aiming angle, etc.

Also, before today I hammered into my desired shape a new custom metal bracket to replace the broken old black plastic OEM bracket that fits on top of the driver side headlamp. Now that light doesn't wobble every time I hit a bump.

Progress.

Yeah that's a European thing. North American's can't be trusted to aim their own lights. And it's a miracle we are still allowed to change our own gears (not that you can find a standard disco here).
