Default Heads: disco 1 and 2 interchangable

I am looking for some heads to build up for my disco 2. Can I get some from a disco 1?
I read a couple things that the SAI hole is the difference?? Can I just ditch the SAI?
Asking since there are a lot more cheap heads to start with from disco1s out there.
Or I should ask, is there some particular year that they were the best?
Is there a performance head I can buy somewhere?

There are plenty of heads out there to be had. To keep things simple if you have sai i would just starts with a set of sai head throw in some cheby valves & spings, shortened guides, gasket match, the standard stuff

If you have SAI you need head that are for SAI, from a D2 or P38.

If you don't have SAI you can use heads from a 4.0 or 4.6 from a D1, D2, or P38. (Maybe the 97 Defender too).

I have an 01, so I assume I have SAI, right?

This could be a seperate thread, but, do I need SAI? I know what it does is help warm up the cats when cold. Does nothing for performance or longevity that I can see. Just more weight and things to break, no? Can I remove it alltogether? Would I get a check engine light if i did? On previous cars I have blocked off head-clogging EGR valves, but at least SAI doesn't seem to have any specifically bad features.

In 01, probably not, unless it's California. But it's possible.

I'm pretty sure I have those flexy looking metal hoses that go in to my manifold. I am tempted to remove the whole system. I'll confirm tomorrow

If you do have it then removing would cause a check engine light and you would have to replace your computer/gauge cluster/etc with some from a pre-SAI Discovery.

yea. I figured a light would go on. I could remove the system AND cut the wire to the check engine light! 2 problems solved!
Curious though: how would it know the system isn't working? Think it's sensing that there should be a leaner mixture at the 02 sensors when it blows? Resistance from the fan?
I'd rather repurpose the SAI to be an on-demand electric supercharger.
Ok, i've gotten a bit silly here. But really though
