Default Heater cooling on idle

I have a 2003 LR Discovery II

I've found that when the heater is on, it doesn't seem to pump out any heat until the car is in motion or is I push the idle rate up to about 1000 rpms. Is that normal?? It's a total pain in a cold climate because the truck won't heat up until you actually start moving, etc

Thoughts??

Check your coolant level.

Jay, have the same issue with my Disco II. Do you hear a waterfall sound near your glovebox? The most common reason the heat stops working when at idle formany Disco II's is because there has at some point been loss of fluid. When the fluid level drops, if air gets into the cooling system, it will cause the heat to stop working at idle. First thing is to see if you have a leak anywhere...could be a hose, could be something more serious like the dreaded head gasket leak. After finding the source of the leak, start your car (cold), crank the heat and add coolant to the reservoir. Leave the top off the coolant for a few minutes until the thermostat opens. By doing this you are getting the air out of the system which should solve your problem. Good luck.

Actually, you get better results from bleeding the engine if done when cold, NOT RUNNING, adding coolant until it flows from the bleed screw, then replace the bleed screw and the coolant recovery bottle.
Drive as normal with the heater on for a while on high speed/high temp, then recheck you coolant level when cold again and add if necessary. If the coolant level continues to drop again have some one perform a coolant pressure test to find the leak and repair.

There is only one for your Disco, refered to as OAT or Dexcool, kind of pink/orange in color, made by a few different manufactures.
