heating
hello everyone,
thanks for the admin team to put up forum with regards to LRs.
i have a 2004 disco 2 , just baught it a month back out of my greatest passion for the LRs.
it was all good until last week when engine started to heat all of a sudden .
i took the car to a local mechanic, but even after the repair engine still heats. he informed that he have change the gasket kit of the cylinder.
what happens with the car is that when i open the hood after over heating i see water pumped to the tank where we fill the coolant. it pupms and over flow from the over flow pipe. and now there is a loud noise from the engine like a heavy air bow(which was not there before)
i asked him he says its the problem with the fan.
i seriously doubt am beeing cheeted by this mechanic.
experts kindly advice on this matter.
am not a technical person so please ignore if am talking any nonsense .

You have a head gasket leaking (hopefully). The fan can be ruled out by removing the rubber fan belt. Normal rate is about 12-15 hours shop labor, plus parts (costs 300 US) plus machine shop to mill heads flat (200 US).

If I were you, I would go find a good Rover mechanic and get a second option and estimate.
Get back to us and let us know what they find and what sort of an estimate you are getting.

By the way, if by overheating, you mean the gauge has gone all the way to the end of the scale, and a red light has come on.... it actually started before that. The gauge will show 50% from about 150F to about 240F, when you would like to be in the 180-200F range. If you have gone to the end of the scale you have really heated things up, may have warped cylinder head. Please try not to repeat while you get this worked out.
thank you experts,
yes the mechanic suggested the same jobs as mentioned
1) cylinder head surface polish at lathe
2) gasket kit change
3) radiator cleaning
regarding the fan , he is tellin me that the fan is connected direct instead it has to automatically switch on /off . if we want engine noise to go i need to change the fan.
@ Savannah Buzz , it all happened all of a sudden , will take care next time ,thanks a lot
@redwhitekat yep will check that
@Disco Mike , i took a second estimate but thats more expensive

The mechanic is trying to tell you that the viscous fan clutch has failed in the 100% coupling mode, so that will make a louder fan noise. In your unit the fan and clutch are a single unit. This extra load on the water pump is not good. Many times a fan clutch problem is soon followed by a water pump problem as they are bonded together for life. I'd advise adding a WP to the list.
