help
First of all, you'll have to accept that you now own one of the worst s.u.v when it comes to fuel consumption. Any vehicle that weighs 5000lbs, that is permenantly in 4wd, with an underpowered 1960s V8will suck gas more than others almost twice its size with 21st century engineering.
The only way to improve m.p.g, is to buy better less restrictive spark plug wires with a greater plug gap(between 0.45-0.50 ) and make sure that your O2 sensors are in perfect shape ( to be changed around 85000 to 100000 miles). There's a debate about the use of K&N filters. Some have used it without troubles, while others swear those filters will kill your Mass Air Flow sensor. You'll have to use premium and if possible, when needed, you can start using synthetics in everything( tranny, diffs, axles ).Make sure your tires are inflated properly and be easy on the go-pedal.
Other than that, you're pretty much screwed and tatooed.

Adam, What are you getting for in town mileage and on the road at what speed? Do you us high octane gas?
As for the K&N filter, us it and loose it, it will kill your MAF. As for the gas, it is alway high octane, not when you can. Depending on your mileage may need to look at your 02 sensors, and plug wires. never increase your plug gas on a vehicle the runs coil packs, which fir twice on every stroke, or you will be paying out $600 for a new set of coil packs sooner then later.

I changed my ignition coil ( form Autohaus ) and it has 2.
Costs $208 for both. I also changed my wires since one of the wire has 3 times more impedance than the rest.
Impedance I checked once I had the wires off.
Mike, you are right about those coil firing twice per cylinder per cycle.
