Help! Gear oil leaking out on brakes.
Thanks for the replys. On the master cylinder I thought was bad, I think its fine. I assumed the wet oil look under the dash was the master cylinder leaking through the booster. On closer examination of the schematics on the booster, there is no way for fluid to leak through it. I pulled the master cylinder out and sure enough there is no evidence of any kind of leak at the back seal. I assume this oil residue is just some kind of lubricant for the brake push rod or some old power steering fluid seeping through the fire wall from an old leak that i have since fixed but, had soaked everything under hood pretty good. I have not even opened the box the new master cylinder came in, I suppose I will send it back and put that credit toward a rather pricey new hub.
I noticed the master cylinders is now seeping around the reservoir grommets to master cylinder body connection. I guess where I was messing with it trying to see if it was leaking out the back. So my question is, how long do these master cylinders last? Im debating on going on and installing the new one rather then send it back. If I send it back I am going to have to pay shipping $20 AB 20% restocking fee $40 and then I will have to purchase the Master cylinder reservoir kit $75 plus shipping $14 For a grand total of $150 spent. With the end result of still having a 10 year old master cylinder with 118k miles on it. Or do I just install The new one I have sitting in a box? I guess if the master cylinder are known to last for ever it might be worth do it this way and pocketing the $50 dollar difference I would save by just fixing the reservoir seep.
There is no lubricant inside the booster, so if you are getting fluid from it, it has to be brake fluid and if it has been leaking long enough, it has eaten thru the diaphram and you booster may also be on the way out.
Thats what I originally thought too, But when I pulled the master cylinder off and examined the rear seal it was bone dry. Only leak I have now is the grommets between reservoir and master cylinder body and that only started once I was messing around with it checking the rear seal.
