Took front cover off and everything had been replaced by previous owner when head gaskets were changed. Put aftermarket oil pressure and water temp gauges on it. Oil pressure was good up until the 190 degree mark. Then I heard the very unmistakable noise of a slipped sleeve at the 180 degree mark. Tried to convince myself to pin the liners and couldn't bring myself to do it. Not throwing thousands at top hat liners. The next obvious solution was to run cooler than 180. Did that and lots of problems went away like low oil pressure and the slipped liner. Had to fool my ecu to make it happy and I can let you know exactly what I did if you want. Just a lot to type! Now when it is to temp (160 degress) and idling, I have 20 psi of oil pressure
Sent you a PM
Thank you

I have both. They are the same except for the oil sender... the 4.0 has a larger thread for the oil sender/pressure/switch and has a single blade on top for a connector. The newer one has a regular plastic connector with two wires, but only one reaches the connector... long way of saying that it is comically easy to change from the 4.6 connector to the 4.0 (cut and crimp blade connector), but the other way around would be more difficult because you would have to have the right kind of connector. The covers are the same, otherwise. (I had to swap mine recently so I am sure of this).

I'm not sure whether Bosch and GEMS covers are interchangeable.

great information i would like to know how you did that i have the same problem and i used a 180 inline thermostat i live in florida and the heat is very strong now it doesn't sound as loud but if it does hear a bit i use rotella 15/40 oil the I had to rebuild the engine because the pump had broken the previous owner and everything is new except the rocker arms and the cam, but the bearings are all new, even the cam.

Good luck.
hello friend, one question, what should be the normal oil pressure numbers in a discovery 2 4.6, I see a lot of variety in that regard, cold relatin, cold 2000rpm, hot relatin, hot 2000rpm? Thank you

[morbengan]. Hey...can you send a PM on what steps you took on the ECU side to fool it to accepting < 180 degree thermostat? also, where did you source the lower temp one?

Last forum activity by that user was three years ago.
Read up on the inline thermostat. You can put any temperature you want in it.

yes, I found the info on setting up the inline thermostat...it was the mods to the ECU to get it to not throw codes when running lower temps I was trying to get.
