Help Repairing Alternator
I blew up my alternator recently (see "Attached Battery Backwards"...) and installed a $120 refurbished one to get up and running again. I'm working on repairing the broken alternator now, because I can't stand to throw away a piece of equipment that probably just needs ten or twenty dollars in parts to repair and be good as new.
1st Question: Are these small wires/filaments in this picture, in the center and left background (in focus), supposed to have a gap in them, or are those blown diodes? I only know diodes from pictures, and am guessing maybe those are the diodes. Would they have a break like that if they were blown?
2nd Question: In the foreground of the picture, the blurry three metal twisted things: They seem like they're soldered on, disallowing me from pulling off the top piece attached to it. Am I supposed to break that soldered connection, or disconnect another way?

Brushes? Can't make out much from your photo and recommend doing a internet search for some sort parts manual covering the alt to give you a better idea what you looking at. My last alt was years ago when replacements were not as readily available & high dollar. Yours looks like it was already road hard before the frying.
Thread from D2 "Write ups" , "How To's" , and "MUST Reads" might help because you'll have to disassemble further to do any repairs anyway.

those are the diodes roasted ($65), plus you will need a regulator($20), brushes and bearings ($30).
see the $$$$ adding up. and that doent include an armiture or stator if needed. to the junk pile

number9 — I've been slowly following that write-up on alternator disassembly. My alternator, from a 2004, is a little different than in that write-up somehow, but it's still helpful.
drowssap — Thanks for the info, just what I was wondering. So I won't bother trying to replace parts on it then. I'll probably keep it around and disassemble it for my own learning purposes; it's like having a cadaver to play with.

Just save yourself the nightmare of rebuilding it in order for your rover to run, and buy a new one if you can - i got my latest at O'reilly auto parts and it's a champ!
you can always rebuild it while it's on your workbench.... that's the theory anyways :P
