snow driving is easy,,

i am on street tires.

lock your center diff right off,,
drive in 3rd gear to get moving,,
downshift to 2nd and to 1st when driving down a hill,,
when coming to a stop start slowing well before the place you want to stop. only use the first 1/4 of your brake peddle.
if you are in doubt, then DO NOT attempt,,,

have fun!

I live in Ithaca NY, which is full of lots of snow and a lot of hills. Disco Mike, your 2nd point is definetly right, i do not really have a clue how to drive in the snow, which is why i bought a 4 wheel drive car to get me through it (i guess i was wrong). Another problem is that i dont know what any of this stuff sloppyjoe said means. Im not sure what t/pass or CDL is either. I dont use the gear box, i just put it in D and go, maybe this could be my problem. I have a feeling i have a lot of features to learn in the car to help me get through the snow, which im hoping you could provide more detailed info/suggestions for a noob like me. Thanks alot for all your responses thus far

A car will not make up for the lack of experiance, nothing will.

You need to double your stopping distance, so if you would normally start trying to stop 100ft away from a stop sign you now need to start trying to stop 200ft away.
When you press the brake pedal and you feel the ABS lick in, back off the pedal until the ABS stops working then press down again but not enough for the ABS to kick back in, it takes practice.
Locking the transfer case will not help you stop.
How long have you been driving?
How long have you have your Disco?
What year is it?

Here is something that I forgot to add, without traction you have no control, you cant stop, steer or go.
Control is everything, without it you are dead in the water.
You need to drive slower in the snow.

my disco is 2001. ive been driving for about5 years, the discovery for a little over a year. Before that i drove a BMW m3 and a ford escort. I know that you need to increase stopping distance, and drive slower. I drive unbelivably slow when there is snow out. It just doesnt make sense why when i step on the brake the car slides uncontrollably down the hill, while other cars are fine. After reading replies it sounds like my mud tires arnt exactly the best of the snow, and that i need to learn more about various controls to handle the snow. As i said above, i just put it in D and go. What should i be doing?

Nothing different that you should be doing, just take your tires into account and adjust your driving for them.
You can have your ABS checked out to make sure that it is working properly.
Your best bet would be to buy snow tires and then run the M/T's in the summer.

Brakes are your worst enemy while going down a hill in slippery conditions.
Learn about your Hill Descent button (yellow one with truck on hill) once you experience it work its magic once you'll always want to use it.
Also, if you throw it in 1 Low shouldn't need to break at all... unless your about to ram someone of course. The disco does well in the snow once you get it all figured out.
Like I said avoid hitting the breaks as much as you can, unless you absolutly have to.

agreed,,,

brakes going down hill and loss of momentum going uphill are your worst enemies.
