The threads on the transmission selector shaft are likely stripped. This happened on my truck back in 2013.

Continue trying to turn the nut to remove it, prying from under it as best you can to try to get the nut to catch the threads toward the end of the shaft. If you can't get under the nut you may be able to pry from underneath the lever on the shaft.

I ended up cutting new threads on the shaft with a die (3/8”, I think; it was part of a tap & die set I had on hand. The new threads were shallow, but the setup has worked fine the last 10+ years.

Check out my post (#10) in the LRO forum thread linked below.

No need to remove the exhaust... Atleast what I can remember.

If You end up replacing the selector shaft.... Have a look at my recent thread

I agree. I have replaced the XYZ switch twice on my truck, and removed one from a boneyard truck. In none of the three cases did I need to do anything with the exhaust, nor does the RAVE mention doing anything with the exhaust, although it does say that on a Td5 the front exhaust needs to be removed. But if your truck is a petrol V8 there's no need to remove the front exhaust pipe.
