For $10k you could source a 2003 that is inoperable for little money then ship it to OKEuro and have them toss in a long block with peerformance cams and gas flowed headers.

I wouldn't buy the newer model only for the headlights and the .6 extra liters of displacement, its not worth the extra trouble for that engine.
I thought only the Freelander, LR3 and above where designed partially by Ford. The Discovery II was still made for a few years while work went into the other models. There are an awful lot of Bosch and BMW parts in the Discos and a ton of Ford parts in the LR3.

Ford bought LR in 2000, but started changing things in 2001, or that's what an article I read says. The D2's, RR's, and Freelander's were all "face lifted" under ford ownership I believe if that article is true. I think that's when they started to cut costs, also, like ditching the lt230 for a non lockable one, but brought back after demand in 2004.

Plan on putting about $2k into whatever you get within the next 2 years or sooner, especially if it has stock head gaskets, water/powersteering/suspention compressor pumps. Don't get my wrong I love my Disco, but they are utter garbage... even worse when they sell even near bluebook, unless they are immaculate and have the documentation and service history on paper to boot.
i have my eye on one for a while but the seller will not budge... original owner from day one. all routine maintenance completed however none of the preventative measures taken, all original suspension, i can see some oil seeping up on top but nothing leaking from below. long story short it needs about $2k in TLC and reconditioning and the seller will not offset the pricing for it because they feel the maintenance is not necessary at this time. what would you place the fair value at? private party.

Didn't they ditch the CDL in '99 with the introduction of the DII? Still there, but no shifter, ... it was more of an urbanization IMO due to the large female and urban ownership / users not needing it with the traction-control.

I looked for an '04, but around here there is a lot of junk, found an '04 with under 100k for $2,000 but needed so much work. Ended up with an '03, there are more of them and they typically sell for ~$1000 less around here.
The problem with buying a project truck is that it will likely always be a project, ... until you've repaired/replaced/adjusted/lubricated/cleaned/tightened/etc. everything that has been neglected for 10+ years. Find a well-loved one and spend the extra money IMO unless you are very handy and/or plan to make it into a trail truck. There are few things more expensive than trying to make a rough truck nice.

let not forget the tax code was also changed in 1999 to help the poor Farmers.

Part of the new farm bill said anything over two ton was considered farm equipment, and to help the farmers get new equipment could be written off in a 4 -year period instead of the standard 10-years.

Only the law didn't say you had to own a Farm

Hens the appearance of Disco and Range Rover and Hummer everywhere during the 2000's, as leased company vehicles.

I think i am the only customer that my accountant had that wasn't driven a new Hummer during the 2000.
